Why did you become a travel agent? Why do you love to travel so much? Where are going next? These are all questions that I am asked every day.
Growing up, everyone has an idea of what they want to be when they become adults. Commonly, a doctor or lawyer comes to mind. I went from aspiring to be a computer scientist to majoring in accounting. Two degrees later, I started working at a public accounting firm. I love Math and Excel excites me! Accounting was a good fit.
As a young girl, I traveled a lot. My family would hop on any bus, plane, or in a car and head to nearest beach, theme park or shopping outlet. We went to family reunions in different cities. My mom also took me to conventions up and down the East coast. I remember going to a NACCP convention in New York and buying my first bootleg cd which was TLC “Fanmail” in front of the World Trade Center. I enjoyed traveling. I enjoyed going to class and telling the teachers, “I’ve seen the White House” or “I’ve been there before”. My mom made sure I was exposed to different places early on.
Back to accounting! Public accounting was draining me and I had a dream. I dreamed of becoming a travel agent. All my family and friends asks me questions all the time about travel anyway.
I bought my first travel book, “How to Start a Travel Agency for Dummies” lol. Nah, that wasn’t the name of it but it had a similar title. I read the book in no time because I was eager to begin my journey. Well, the book wasn’t as much of a motivator as I thought it would be. I began to sleep on my dream again until one or two travel questions a week turned into three different people inquiring about travel in a day. *light bulb* Am I a travel agent without knowing it?
With the push of my boyfriend, I signed up online to become a travel agent on January 28, 2015. For days, I watched every training video they had. I would fall asleep watching webinars. Finally, this was no longer a dream! It felt as if the gates of heaven had opened up to a whole new world!
Now that I am an agent, I love it. Every day isn’t all fun and games but its rewarding. With every trip, I imagine that it is a trip for me. I want others to experience something great when they get away. I want others to enjoy traveling as much as I do.
Being from Smallville, USA, not many people travel extensively. Many people want to travel but don’t know where to begin. Who should I contact? Where are the best places to stay? Do I need a passport? This is where I step in. I want to be that resource people can use to fulfill their travel dreams.
I live for the next adventure and I want others to experience that feeling as well.
